Anger, violence, and aggression may arise, but on a secondary or more superficial level; in a sense, they arise when we are frustrated in our efforts to achieve love and affection. They are not part of our most basic, underlying nature. ~ His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama
Chaos is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence. ~ The Buddha
Genuine compassion is based not on our own projections and expectations, but rather on the rights of the other. ~ His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
What strikes the oyster shell does not damage the pearl. ~ Rumi
Lovingkindness—maitri—toward ourselves doesn’t mean getting rid of anything. Maitri means that we can still be crazy, we can still be angry. We can still be timid or jealous or full of feelings of unworthiness. Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It’s about befriending who we are already. The ground of practice is you or me or whoever we are right now, just as we are. That’s what we come to know with tremendous curiosity and interest. ~ Pema Chodron
